Hi again, farm friend!
Do you ever feel like your life is boring? I do.
I probably shouldn’t say that at the start of this fairly new adventure of writing little notes to you.
After all, you just opened it in hopes we’d:
1) say something super cool and awesome, or
2) give you an undeniable chance to live vicariously through Jeffrey & Lorraine (your favorite ragamuffin goat farmers).
Well, have no fear, sweet farm friend.
I’m going to hit you right now with BOTH ;)
I was just thinking about how sometimes it feels like our life on the farm is quite boring 😴
Wake up before the sun. Walk out of the garage and get yelled at by little hungries to start morning chores. Feed goats & sheep. Check on chickens. Fill waters. Dump, clean and refill waters that someone pooped in 😤. Get jumped on, kicked & scratched. Scratch behind the ears and tell everyone they’re a good boy or girl (…if they are). Get happy tail from the special ones. Wash dirt + hay out of eyes. Knock shin on bottom of hay feeder. Fill more waters. Feed more hay. Go to work. Get off work. Walk out of the garage and get yelled at again for evening chores. More hay. Dump more waters. Belly laugh at SOMETHING. Get inside after dark. Rinse & Repeat.
But then I think “wait, no it’s not…!”
“We literally just hatched 28 baby chicks and they are living (wait for it) in our BASEMENT.”

Okay, that was the little slice of living vicariously through us as a baby chick hatchery ^^^.
Now, here’s the tip to help you make life super cool AND awesome.
Make friends with + support your LOCAL farmers.
Know your farmers, know your food.
You know, like when you signed up for our email list and now we chat once a month(-ish).
Do that with other farmers you know in your city/state/region!
When you make friends with your local farmers, it simply FEELS GOOD and you not only feel empowered but also slightly accomplished that you’re supporting your neighbors who grow things with their hands and who might also have a story to tell.
You can bounce ideas off each other about tending your garden, milking some goats, 100% organic yard control (AKA goat grazing), and really just encourage one another in your journeys toward self sufficiency.
Oh, and of course, my favorite: gratitude for the little things.
Yep. Having farmer friends can definitely help you be more grateful in the day to day & mundane.
Just by seeing small glimpses of their lives, you can see how much joy can be found in picking fresh wild flowers, routine hoof trimming, and even something as simple as the quiet calm found just BEING on an acreage a few minutes outside of the hubbub of town.
It’s like having a secret getaway… that’s just a few clicks away!
If you think you don't know any farmers… that’s not true because you know us! 👋
(and we’re not that scary… are we!?)
Now, here’s what you gotta do.
Check out Buy Local Nebraska or do a simple Google search of “local farms + your city/state”.
Casually browse the results to see if you already know or are a customer of, find where they are online
FOLLOW THEM!
Whether they have a website + newsletter (like the Penner Mini Scoop!) or whether they simply have a social media page on a platform that you already frequent.
All you have to do from there is follow them. Listen to their stories. Hear about what they have to offer. Invest in them if their products/services match what your needs are. Or just tell your friends/family about them if you think they would be a good fit for each other!
Voila! Just like that, your farmer friend list will begin to grow.
And just like that, your joy will also begin to grow. 🌱
I daresay it’s time for us to be kids again and re-learn how to appreciate the simple things in life.
And if all else fails, just hit reply.
We’d love to hear from you!
Okay, back to the baby chicks.
(Seriously, did you hear the cuteness!!)
*faints*
Talk soon.

No! Never boring. Certainly not with all those unexpected incidentals, like findin a python in the coop or the cat giving the turkeys a fright (that happened just now, they freaked!). What is boring is being house bound with a broken toe and unable to even walk to the stables. That's no fun at all! (So I just made another website)
